Although Witney is not on record as having had a Town Crier before, the role in England dates back to Mediaeval times when many people could not read or write.
Town Criers were a vital means of communication and a loud voice was essential as they proclaimed all manner of essential information, news and bylaws, edicts and proclamations. These days we have more “easy on the ear media” to get the message across and Town Criers now perform more of a ceremonial and supporting function.
An informal competition held at Witney Carnival by former Mayor Cllr Enright, resulted in the appointment of Jean Postlethwaite Dixon to this volunteer position.
Jean is currently just one of a handful of Criers in Oxfordshire, has joined the guild and works in parallel with the Mayor attending functions that are official Town Council business to which she is invited by the Town Clerk.
