Witney Lake and Country Park Receives Local Nature Reserve Status

Witney Town Council is delighted to announce the new status for Witney Lake and Country Park as a Local Nature Reserve. This title reflects the determination of the Council and the dedicated efforts of the Green Spaces team in enhancing biodiversity and habitat quality through focused planning and management of the lake.

Local Nature Reserves are special places which are home to wildlife or special geological features. They offer visitors the opportunity to explore, learn about, or simply enjoy being immersed in nature. These reserves can be anything from coastal headlands and ancient woods to colourful meadows and rejuvenated city spaces. They form a vital part of England’s biodiversity.

This achievement not only acknowledges the work and funding committed over the past several years but also supports future applications for additional grants and development opportunities. The international recognition broadens the possibilities for what can be accomplished in the park.

In protecting endangered native plant species and creating new habitats for existing wildlife, the Witney Town Council Green Spaces Team has worked tirelessly to bring the lake to this significant milestone. Recent improvements include wildflower areas planted round the lake and the filling of potholes in footpaths around the lakeside area. Snipe Meadow has also seen the restoration of wetland habitats through scrape digging and the planting, by volunteers, of a community orchard. Visitors can now enjoy well-maintained walking trails, informative signage about local flora and fauna, and a newly created dragonfly habitat, all designed to enhance Witney residents’ engagement with nature.

As the seasons change, Witney Lake and Country Park will serve as an important visitor attraction and recreational destination. The park’s new status as a Local Nature Reserve will ensure it remains a haven for local wildlife and a valuable resource for our town.

Chair of the Climate, Bio-diversity and Planning Committee, Cllr Andy Bailey said “I am incredibly proud of the Green Spaces team and all who have contributed to this fantastic achievement. Securing Local Nature Reserve status for Witney Lake and Country Park is a big step forward for our commitment to protecting and enhancing Witneys natural environment.

This designation is more than a title; it shows that this beautiful space is now formally recognised for its biodiversity and ecological value. It ensures long-term protection, opens the door for future opportunities, and highlights just how special Witney is. Witney Lake and Country Park is a place where nature and community can thrive together.”
