The majority of dog walkers behave responsibly and bag and bin their dog’s poo – thank you. But to those who do not, here is an important message:
Dog mess is a major public concern. It is considered one of the most unacceptable and offensive types of litter in our public spaces. It’s a significant issue for many, including dog owners, not only because of the mess it creates but also due to health risks.
For these reasons, it is crucial for dog walkers to clean up after their pets, regardless of the location. Don’t assume it’s acceptable to leave it in an isolated field or hidden in long grass.
Please avoid walking or exercising your dog in designated children’s play areas and prevent your dog from pooing on marked sports pitches. Our sports teams have to clean up dog mess from the pitches each week before they can play.
Witney Town Council is receiving more complaints than ever about this issue.
Finding increasing amounts of dog mess in cemeteries is particularly sensitive and upsetting. There are reminders about cleaning up after your dog on all the new noticeboards at the entrances to our cemeteries, play areas and the Lake and Country Park. There are plenty of bins in the cemetery, and all dogs must be on leads while in Tower Hill or Windrush Cemetery.
We ask you to be particularly vigilant if your dog is with you. Keep it close and be aware of what it is doing at all times.
Let’s respect the cemetery and its purpose. Remember that it is meant to be a place of reflection and remembrance, and ensure that no visitors are distressed by careless dog owners who do not clean up after their pets.
Here’s what the law says about dog fouling:
- Dog fouling occurs when a person allows a dog in their care to foul in a public place and fails to clean it up immediately.
- Failure to clear up dog fouling on public land is a criminal offence, and anyone found neglecting this duty can be issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice.
- Public places include roads, gutters, footpaths, verges, pedestrian areas, parks, school playing fields, sports grounds, and cemeteries.
You can be fined for not clearing up, but it’s such a quick task that there is no valid reason for not doing it and taking the risk. Carry bags with you and make it your business to deal with your dog’s business.
